The new type of lithium battery
As you already know, every gadget that we use is powered by lithium-ion battery. Maybe they charge fast, but they cannot last long. Even on the most expensive smartphones, they can last one day (even less if you use your phone more). You should know that those batteries are made from the anode, cathode and electrolyte. Graphite is used as the anodic material and Li-ferro phosphate is used as a cathode. While you change your battery, lithium ions migrate from cathode to anode and retains stored electricity. Thanks to researchers from the Stanford University, the new type of material for anode can be used. Lithium metal should increase the battery life and it should run longer on one charge.
Experts are suggesting to use the special protective layer of the anode, which consists of related tiny carbon domes. Scientists call this structure nanospheres. The protective layer has a thickness of only 20 nanometers. The secret that should extend battery life is in the coating of nanospheres. It has good elasticity and chemical stability.
For now, this is just a concept, but researchers are trying to make these batteries a reality. According to some tests, they would be able to power a device up to 24 hours, even when you use your smartphone for playing games, watching movies or surfing the internet. Those actions use more energy than others. Maybe it doesn’t sound as some discovery that will change the world, but anyway that can help us use less energy is a green way. The other benefit is, we will be able to use our smartphones more.
