Five Steps to Prepare an Old Wallpapered Wall for New Wallpapering
Wallpaper can give your interior spaces a new touch of class and elegance. It is imperative to hire an expert who has the necessary skills and equipment to carry out the wallpapering task to get the best results. For today, we will look at five steps to prepare an old wallpapered wall for new wallpapering.
Removing the Old Wallpaper
There are two methods of removing the old wallpaper namely:
- Chemical Stripping solution
- Using an electric steam stripper
As the name suggests, the chemical stripping solution is a liquid that is applied to the wall to ease the process of removing the old wallpaper. The solution dissolves the adhesive thereby detaching the wallpaper from the wall. On the other hand, the electric steam stripper uses steam to moisturize the adhesive.
Clean the Wall
Clean the wall using any of the safe cleaning reagents available in the market to get rid of any remnants of the previous wallpaper and adhesive.
Know the Size of the Wall
Use a tape measure to know the size of the wall or the area that you intend to cover. The measurements will come in handy when shopping for new wallpaper online or offline.
Cut and Soak the New Wallpaper
Cut the new wallpaper based on the measurements you took previously. Then soak it in warm water for a minute to activate the adhesive.
Apply it on the Wall
Remove the wallpaper from the water and place it on your wall gently. Be sure to smooth it by moving your hands over it to remove any trapped air spaces and ensure that it sticks strongly on the wall. A plastic scraper can make this part of the job easier. Work from the centre of the wallpaper strip toward the outside.
When shopping, choose wallpaper that blends and complements the other interior decorations in the room. Don’t shy away from asking for assistance if you are unsure of which type to order to avert regrets down the road.
