Five Things You Need to Plan Before You Build a Deck

Five Things You Need to Plan Before You Build a Deck

Planning and building a deck isn't easy. In fact, many contractors consider decks more troublesome to build than indoor bathrooms.

If you plan on getting a deck instead of a patio, here are five things that you need to consider first.

1.Why Do You Want a Deck?

Is your deck going to be an extension of your indoor living room? Is it a place for the occasional family gatherings? Also, worth considering is the climate where you are living.

2.Spend on Fittings and Fixtures

For example, cheaping out by using low-quality screws will come back to haunt you in a few years. Cheap screws do not last as long, are more prone to corroding, and can cause unsightly discoloration on your deck. More expensive screws, especially stainless steel or coated screws are extremely durable, can last for years, and can even accentuate the look of your desk. The same mindset should apply to the choice of wood you use for the deck.

3.How Much Are You Willing to Spend?

Decks are expensive to build. If you're strapped for cash, one way to still get a deck without having to break the bank is to add a small deck next to a patio so you still have a deck but without the cost of having to cover the entire area.

4.Use Treated Joists

The timber joists are used as the base for your desk. This is why it's only natural you'll want them to withstand many years of damp and rot due to the changing weather. You can also opt for using composite joists when building a composite deck to make your deck last longer.

5.Check with Local Laws

Building codes vary from city-to-city and state-to-state, so make sure to check local laws for information about adding or remodeling your house by adding a deck. Do this before you start investing money on your deck. Otherwise, you might just end up wasting money.
