Welcome To Kolmanskop The Town Where Once Diamonds Grew On Trees
There was a huge influx of people looking for diamonds since it was discovered in April 1908 in the city of Kolmanskop. The city is about 10 kilometres from the Atlantic coast. The place abounded in diamonds, and those in quest of a short-cut to being rich were the first ones to be here. Moreover, there is a typical romance associated with the city.
Although the locals have done their best to create tourist attractions in the town of Kolmanskop, the town wears a deserted look today. Local residents have even set up a small museum with exhibits dating back to centuries.
In the due course of time, there came up schools in the town, and there were elaborate hospitals to cater to the population gathered in town to make money. There were even stadiums for sports and games. This went on for many years, till it developed and evolved like any other town in modern Germany.
Ever sine the diamonds that were the attractions of this place stopped coming up as easily, and digging for diamonds involves a longer drill down the earth without any results, the town has worn a deserted look.
There have been and often are sandstorms through the area that decorate the landscape with patterns in sand. There is a scarcity of drinking water here typical to all deserts. It has been almost 10 years since humans were in this place to dig for diamonds.
The town of Kolmanskop is virtually dried up. Most of the houses are now covered with sand. The overall atmosphere is quite eerie and at times depressing.
